后来，她外出打工，又被老板轰了回来，因为动作太慢。母亲对女儿说，手脚总是有快有慢，别人已经干很多年了，而你一直在念书，怎么快得了？

女儿又干过很多工作，但无一例外，都半途而废。

然而，每次女儿沮丧地回来时，母亲总安慰她，从没有抱怨。

三十岁时，女儿凭著一点语言天赋，做了聋哑学校的辅导员。

后来，她又开办了一家残障学校。 再后来，她在许多城市开办了残障人用品连锁店，她已经是一个拥有几千万资产的老板了。

有一天，功成名就的女儿问已经年迈的母亲，自己都觉得前途渺茫的时候，是什么原因让母亲对她那么有信心呢？

母亲的回答朴素而简单。她说，一块地，不适合种麦子，可以试试种豆子；豆子也长不好的话，可以种瓜果；如果瓜果也不济的话， 撒上一些荞麦种子一定能够开花。

因为一块地，总有一粒种子适合它，也终会有属于它的一片收成。

现代的世界好像大有作为，又好像柔弱无能；能行至大的善，也能做最坏的恶。它目前所面对的，是走向自由或奴役的途径，进步或堕落的途径，友爱或仇恨的途径。此外，人类亦意识到自己所有的智能，可能贻害于人，亦可能为人服务，全看自己是否善于运用。因此，它不禁扪心自问。

诚然，现代世界所患的不平衡，与那植根于人心的基本不平衡，是紧相连接的。在人本身内，存在着许多互相水火的因素；一方面，由于人是受造者，而感到自身受到多方面的限制；另一方面，又感到自身具有无穷的愿望，并被召度一种更高超的生活。

人类为众多欲念所吸引，故必须经常有所抉择，有所放弃。甚至由于自身的柔弱无能及向恶成性，往往做出本心不愿做的事，而不做那本心所愿做的事。于是，人在自身内，便感到分裂之苦，而社会上如此众多与巨大的争执，便肇端于此。

许多实际上度著唯物生活者，颇不欲正视这戏剧性的情况，或者为了众多不幸，而无暇思考这个问题。又有人以为自己不妨相信人们对人生所有的各种意见，以博取良心的苟安。

还有人希望，专靠人的奋斗，便可完全拯救人类，并深信人类在此世的未来王国里，可以满足人心的所有需求。

又有人对人生意义既感失望，因而表示赞扬另一些人的大胆思想。这些人认为人生根本毫无意义可言。他们主张，由人们自行给予人生以全部意义。

虽然如此，面对世界的发展，仍然有日形增多的人们提出，并以锐利的目光研究下列问题：人究竟是什么？痛苦、罪恶及死亡的意义何在？何以人类做出了这么多进步之后，这问题仍然存在？人类在付出偌大代价之后所获致的胜利，何益之有？人类对社会能提供什么贡献？人由社会能期待些什么？尘世生命结束之后，继之而来者，将是什么？

教会深信为人受死并复活的基督，曾藉其圣神，提供人类以光明及神力，以协助人们完成自身的崇高使命。普天之下，没有其他名字，使我们赖以得救的。

同样，教会深信人类整个历史的锁钥、中心及宗旨，是在它的主及导师──基督内找到。

教会也肯定，在一切演变之下，潜存著许多不变的事物，而这些事物的最后基石则是基督；祂昨日和今天常是一样，直到永远仍然如此。

一位年老的印度大师身边有一个总是抱怨的弟子。
有一天，他派这个弟子去买盐，弟子回来后。
大师吩咐这个不快活的年轻人抓一把盐放在一杯水中，然后喝了。
「味道如何呢？」大师问。
「苦。」弟子呲牙咧嘴地吐了口吐沫。
大师又吩咐年轻人把剩下的盐都放进附近的湖里，弟子于是把盐倒进湖里。
老者说：「再尝尝湖水。」
年轻人捧了一口湖水尝了尝。
大师问道：「什么味道呢？」
「很新鲜。」弟子答道。
「你尝到咸味了吗？」大师问。
「没有。」年轻人答道。
这时大师对弟子说道：「生命中的痛苦就像是盐：不多，也不少，我们在生活中遇到的痛苦就这么多，
但是，我们体验到的痛苦却取决于它盛放在多大的容器中，所以，当你处于痛苦时，你只要开阔你的胸怀，
不要做一只杯子，而要做一个湖泊。」
